The Story of Creation
A few winters after Spotted Cat's Sacred Mountain adventure, he walked with his friend, White Bison Calf, to the night fire in the center of the village. The people were joyously drumming and singing. After the music came to an end, someone asked Grandfather Tree Spirit to tell a story. Calf chimed in "Grandfather, tell the story how the first people came to be on the Earth."
Everyone fell silent as the old shaman began to speak:
"Before any creature existed, there was only the sacred silence that we call Sky Mother of the Sacred Void. Her body was a dark void and this darkness was the All That Is. Our dark mother had a thought, I would like to create another being. When Sky Mother had this thought, a bolt of lightning pierced the Sacred Void causing a clap of thunder. This first sound was the loudest sound ever made. The bolt of lightning and thunder became Sky Father.
Sky Mother was very excited by her creation and her excitement caused sparks to scatter from the lightning bolt. The many sparks became the stars and the bolt's journey through the Sacred Darkness became the path of the spirit world. We can look up now and see his path of stars reaching across the sky."
Everyone gazed at the stars, thinking about Sky Father's journey through the blackness of night. All eyes were again on Tree as he continued:
"Now, Sky Father became excited about his part in creating the stars and he reached out ot Sky Mother and they embraced. The Sacred Twins of Creation were happy to have someone to be a reflection of themselves. Their exhilaration caused the stars to give birth to the many worlds so they would have companions.
The worlds birthed by the stars were cold and dark like huge black boulders larger than many mountains. The lightning bolt hurtled through the blackness surrounded by the stars and their children worlds. While still in an embrace, Mother and Father Sky felt like they were merging into one being, when they collided with the world we walk on. The impact caused them to tingle with rapture and heightened their sense of unity. When the Sacred Twins of Creation felt this ecstasy of joining, all of Earth's creatures came into being. There was two of every creature, so they too would have someone to reflect themselves."
